Photo Gallery :: Cave Pearls

Formed as calcite rich water drips into their tiny nests, cave pearls must be amongst the most beautiful of all speleothems we could ever encounter - and are certainly a personal favourite of the Winster Cavers. These photographs were taken in caves, and mines throughout the UK - don't ask us where though, that's a secret!

Possibly the most rare and unusual cave pearls we've ever seen, these black gems are little more than the size of a pin head. The unique thing about them is that the pearls themselves are pure black, whereas their nest is a regular calcite colour.
