Formed as calcite rich water drips into their tiny nests, cave pearls must be amongst the most beautiful of all speleothems we could ever encounter - and are certainly a personal favourite of the Winster Cavers. These photographs were taken in caves, and mines throughout the UK - don't ask us where though, that's a secret!

HyperLink Cave pearls can only grow so big, before their own weight destroys them. HyperLink
As cave pearls grow, their weight starts to prevent them from rolling around under the force of the dripping, calcite rich water. As they lie static, the newly deposited calcite welds them to their surroundings.
