Photo Gallery :: Lava caves of Sicily

The volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, Sicily, play host to several hundred lava tubes. The caves range from small cavities of minimal interest, to lava caves of over 1km in length. On our 2010 visit to Sicily, we made a special effort to visit, and photograph, some of the more accessible lava tubes. This photo gallery presents some of the results!

Directly below a skylight near the far end of Grotta dei Lamponi, an enormous cairn has gradually been constructed. Why is a mystery as it would be impossible to get lost in here!
